Gatwick Airport Guide for Crew
London Gatwick Airport (LGW), located in West Sussex, stands as the United Kingdom’s second-busiest airport and a vital international hub. As the world’s most efficient single-runway airport, it serves as a critical operational base for major carriers including British Airways, easyJet, and Jet2. Because of its massive scale and 24/7 nature, Gatwick attracts thousands of aviation professionals, making the demand for high-quality pilot accommodation and cabin crew accommodation consistently high. Whether you are a pilot, flight attendant, or flight engineer looking for a long-term base or short-term relief, the area surrounding the airport offers a diverse range of living options tailored to the unique lifestyle of airline staff.
The airport is conveniently situated near the town of Crawley, which serves as the primary residential hub for many aviation employees. For those prioritizing a short commute, areas like Three Bridges, Pound Hill, and Horley are exceptionally popular. These neighborhoods provide a mix of modern apartments and semi-detached homes, frequently utilized for shared crew housing or private rentals. Because Gatwick is so well-connected by rail to both London and the South Coast, crew members also frequently choose to live in more vibrant locations like Brighton or the quieter, picturesque villages of East Grinstead and Charlwood. These areas offer the perfect balance between professional accessibility and personal relaxation, allowing crew members to disconnect during their downtime.
Finding suitable airport crew accommodation involves choosing between various property types. Many aviation professionals opt for furnished accommodation for airline crew, which eliminates the hassle of setting up a household from scratch. You will find a wide variety of options, ranging from professional house shares to private studio apartments. Websites specializing in short-term rentals and local letting agencies in Crawley and Redhill are goldmines for finding dedicated crew houses. These properties are often strategically located near major bus routes and train stations, ensuring that even those without personal vehicles can reach the North or South Terminals with ease.
Living near Gatwick offers more than just proximity to the runway. The region is rich with amenities, including large shopping centers, diverse dining options, and access to the stunning countryside of the Surrey Hills and the Sussex coast. For cabin crew accommodation hunters, the flexibility of the local transport network—which includes 24-hour bus services—is a major advantage, ensuring that late-night arrivals or early-morning departures are never a logistical headache. Whether you are looking for a bustling town center atmosphere or a quiet village retreat, you will find that the housing market around LGW is well-accustomed to the specific requirements of airline staff, offering a supportive and well-connected environment for your career.

Gatwick Airport is famously well-connected, boasting the title of the UK’s best-connected airport by train. The train station is conveniently located at the South Terminal, just a five-minute walk from the arrivals and departures area. For those arriving at the North Terminal, a free, 24-hour automated shuttle bus connects the two terminals in just two minutes.
Rail services are extensive, with four major operators serving the station. The Gatwick Express offers a non-stop, 30-minute service to London Victoria, while Southern trains provide frequent services to London and the South Coast. Thameslink is particularly useful for those living in or commuting through London, with direct trains to London Bridge, Blackfriars, Farringdon, and St Pancras International, as well as connections reaching as far as Bedford and Brighton. Great Western Railway also operates services to Reading.
For local travel, Metrobus operates an extensive network of buses, including the Fastway 10, 20, and 100 routes, which run 24 hours a day. These services are essential for crew members, connecting both terminals to residential areas such as Crawley, Horley, Redhill, and Reigate. With single fares often capped at a competitive rate, these buses provide a cost-effective and reliable way for staff to reach the airport at any hour. For those residing in hotels near the airport, the 'Gatwick Hoppa' service offers dedicated transfers. The area is also fully integrated into the national coach network, with National Express and other providers offering frequent connections to destinations across the UK. Whether you are relying on public transit for your daily commute or occasional travel, the airport's infrastructure is designed to be seamless for aviation employees.
